Learn Your ‘Why’ From Simon Sinek at WorkHuman 2018

In what is now the third most viewed TED talk of all time – How Great Leaders Inspire Action – Simon Sinek introduced the idea of the Golden Circle. At the center of the circle is why. “Very few people or organizations know why they do what they do,” he said. Most operate from the outer circles of what they do and how they do it.

And yet, “people don’t buy what you do; people buy why you do it,” he argued.

Why does your company exist? Is it simply to make a profit or is there a higher purpose? Why does your organization prioritize certain HR initiatives as opposed to others? Why do you do what you do?

Today we are thrilled to announce Simon Sinek will join us at WorkHuman 2018, April 2-5 in Austin, Texas, to talk about his latest theories on leadership.

A trained ethnographer, Simon is a visionary business thinker and author of three best-selling books: Start With Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action; Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don’t; and Together is Better: A Little Book of Inspiration. He teaches leaders and organizations – from foreign ambassadors to corporations like Microsoft and 3M – how to inspire people.

So why is Simon coming to WorkHuman 2018? He’ll show us how to help our leaders lead with purpose rather than authority – and why emotional safety is so important to fostering a healthy company culture.

  • From his talk, Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe: “If the conditions are wrong, we are forced to expend our own time and energy to protect ourselves from each other, and that inherently weakens the organization. When we feel safe inside the organization, we will naturally combine our talents and our strengths and work tirelessly to face the dangers outside and seize the opportunities.”

It is not a rank.I know many people at the senior-most levels of organizations who are absolutely not leaders. They are authorities, and we do what they say because they have authority over us, but we would not follow them. And I know many people who are at the bottoms of organizations who have no authority and they are absolutely leaders, and this is because they have chosen to look after the person to the left of them, and they have chosen to look after the person to the right of them. This is what a leader is.”
