Neither internally or extrinsically motivated employees are particularly motivated by e-thanks alone. E-thanks often has the unfortunate result of feeling disappointing or underwhelming to employees, as the organization isn’t backing up its positive sentiments with a tangible manifestation of its message – resulting in a subtle message that the performance lacks value.
