Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in the workplace are critical to attracting and retaining top talent – and to fostering an environment where all employees can thrive.
According to Gallup research, the vast majority of HR leaders (97%) report that their organization has made changes to improve DEI, but just over a third of employees (37%) say the same.
With employees increasingly expecting organizations to implement DEI policies and practices, pressing is mounting to hold businesses accountable to DEI commitments. But the challenge for many organizations is driving meaningful and sustainable change – as well as where and how to focus their DEI efforts.
Key findings from Gartner® research point to some of the reasons why DEI progress is stalled.
According to Gartner, “too many DEI programs lack benchmarks, measurable targets, and clear business outcomes. This means organizations did not put enough effort into DEI even before the pandemic. As a result, the pandemic resulted in shelved DEI programs and a wipeout of pre-pandemic DEI gains.”
Gartner research also shows “lack of focus impedes progress because organizations tackle too much. They simultaneously change recruiting, retention, promotion, development of minorities and women, and the promotion of diverse candidates into leadership roles. As a result, DEI progress stalls.”
