Actress and Social Activist

Salma Hayek Pinault is an acclaimed actress, director, and producer. She has also dedicated much of her time to social activism.

Starring in dozens of movies, Salma was nominated for an Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and a BAFTA Award for her leading role in “Frida.” She is also credited in numerous television shows including “Ugly Betty,” for which she was an executive producer, “30 Rock,” and “Saturday Night Live.” She received a Daytime Emmy Award for directing “The Maldonado Miracle.”

Salma served as spokesperson for the Pampers/UNICEF partnership worldwide, to help stop the spread of life-threatening maternal and neonatal tetanus. She also is a spokesperson for the Avon Foundation’s Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program, which focuses on domestic violence education, awareness and prevention, as well as support for victims.

In 2005, Salma testified in front the U.S. Senate, encouraging the extension of the Violence Against Women Act, which resulted in a $3.9 billion allocation to U.S. agencies.

Salma has been on the board of the Kering Foundation since 2009. The foundation aims to combat violence against women, focusing specifically on sexual violence in America, harmful traditional practices in Western Europe, and domestic violence in Asia. The foundation also pays specific attention to refugee and migrant women worldwide.

In 2013, Salma, alongside Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Frida Giannini, the then creative director of Gucci, co-founded Chime for Change, an organization dedicated to improving the education, help and welfare of women and girls around the world.

Salma was born and raised in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico.
